When Aarhus in 2018 hosts the Sailing World Championships, it will not only be a championship as you know it from the sporting world. It will also be a world class maritime public festival where the guests are invited to celebrate sailing, the city, the citizens and guests both on land and at sea.
For the public festival, we will open the entire harbor area, the traditional marina, the brand new International Sailing Center Aarhus and the new residential area Aarhus Ø. While the professional athletes compete on the blue waters, the whole of the harbor area will bustle with activities big and small.
The sailing clubs and rowing clubs will open their doors and put their boats on water so everyone gets the opportunity to step over the quayside and board. Every day you can meet representatives from the local sailing clubs, who can both help you get to sea and enlighten you about the sailing milieu in Aarhus. The divers, surfers and all in between will follow suit and invite you to try everything from stand-up paddle to diving in a container filled with water. If you fancy a more relaxing activity, you can try the wilderness bath.
The pulsing knowledge-center of the city will teach us about the harbor, the ocean and the history and future of seafaring. Explore the stories and history of the old marina or meet the past when the history of man at sea is told and the Vikings come into port. Join the gathering, tasting and experiencing of the versatile pantry and fauna of the sea. Experience a whiff of the future when the training ship Georg Stage, the maritime educations and the Danish Defence move into the port.
Every day on stage there will be music for both children and adults. Become captivated by bygone times when shanty choirs take the stage and sing sea shanties, join the singalong, dance along when Aarhus Brass Band perform or take the children to hullabaloo entertainment or hat theater.
During the public festival, the water will be filled with boats and ships of all sizes, which there will be plenty opportunities to visit or simply to enjoy the sight of. Everything from model sailboats and the slightly larger dinghies to the large and beautiful tall ships. The tall ships will tower over the harbor with their tall masts and sails, especially the pirate ship The Shtandart which will fulfill your wildest pirate dreams.
All the above is simply a selection of the diverse and versatile program to be experienced during the maritime public festival. So keep an eye on our website – the finale program will be released on June 1st 2018.
