Sustainability is high on the agenda when Aarhus 2018 opens the door to world class sailing and maritime festival.
Sailing is dependent on the environment. The International Sailing Association: World Sailing has the environmental vision, that the sport has no negative impact on the environment. Aarhus 2018 wishes to be an exponent of this vision. The ambitions are to raise awareness of the problem with plastic pollution of the oceans while focusing on new sustainable solutions. Therefore, local actors, companies and organizations with a focus on sustainability, innovative solutions and resource-optimizing conditions are invited on board.
The sustainability program
With inspiration from the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, we strive to develop a comprehensive sustainability programme at the championships that both deals with sailors on the water and party-goers on the land. More info on selected projects:
Waste management systems for boats (SDG14):
A waste bag is designed to alleviate the waste management problem on boats that there is currently no solution for. On land, a system is ready to receive the trash and the recyclables. The custom designed bag will be implemented by all participating nations under the championships as a givaway and will subsequently be brought out into the world.
A maritime garden with mussles will be showcased to the visitors. The muzzles are able to purify water or can be eaten, if the water is clean.
Issues: We’re still searching for a better solution in filling up the boat tanks with gasoline.
There will be a great deal of communication about life below water in general.
Clean drinking water (SDG6):
Clean drinking tap water is normal in Denmark. We need to tell all participants to drink the water, even though it doesn’t smell of chlorine, it’s clean and safe to drink. We want to give away only refillable water bottles, no disposables and make refilling easy by establishing water posts at the Venue.
Recycling and catering (SDG12):
- Pushing for locally produced organic food.
- Reducing and sorting catering waste.
- Plastic and resource optimisation by recycling, deposit schemes and collecting.
Making audience use city bikes and public transportation (SDG11)
Data Collection of the event’s resource consumption (transport, energy etc.), which can be used as benchmarks by The City of Aarhus and World Sailing for future events. By looking into these categories beforehand it will be possible to analyse what can be optimised before the event is carried out. Data collection with therefore be used both as a checklist before the championship takes place as well as a debriefing tool afterwards.
All informations about your sustainable actions will be communicated in a learning area around the site.
