Nine Laser Radial sailors’ are heading to Cadiz, Spain for the Andalusian Olympic Week as part of the Hempel Sailing World Championships Aarhus 2018 Emerging Nations Programme (ENP).

Starting on 24 February 2018, the Andalusian Olympic Week will act as a selection event for the sailors’ to attend a funded training camp before the Hempel Worlds Aarhus 2018 which takes place in the Danish city from 30 July to 12 August.

The training camp, help directly before the Hempel Worlds Aarhus 2018, will be an intense four week training programme, fully funded by Aarhus 2018 and World Sailing with expert coaching to help prepare the competitors for the first Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification event.

The ENP is offered to already skilled sailors’ who require financial and coaching support to prepare for the World Championships. Sailors’ in the Laser Radial have been identified to help increase participation in the class in the lead up to Tokyo 2020. The athletes’ racing in Cadiz include:

  • Kim Pletikos (SLO)
  • Hulda Hannesdottir (ISL)
  • Isabella Maegli Aguero (GUA)
  • Sofiia Larycheva (UKR)
  • Deisy Nhaquile (MOZ)
  • Mariela Nikolova (BUL)

Latvia’s Elerte raced at the 2017 Youth Sailing World Championships in Sanya, China, finishing 12th in the Laser Radial. Mozambique’s Nhaquile also raced at the 2017 edition, coming in 30th place overall.

The two competitors are graduates of the Youth Sailing World Championships Emerging Nations Programme and have progressed through that initiative and into the senior ranks.
